Economic, social and political roles of the La Guardia airport
Airport industry is becoming instrumental in every nation. Unlike other transport industries, airport industry affects all the dimensions of life in every nation. Airport industries influence a country politically, economically and socially. The roles of airports are vital and affect the whole world. This paper would explore the roles of LaGuardia airport. LaGuardia Airport is among the busiest airfields in New York. LaGuardia’s facility is about 280 hectares. The paper examines the social, economic and political roles of LGA to its environment and the United States as a whole. Since the impacts of an airport are international, this paper also highlights on the international roles of LaGuardia airport.
Economics Roles
LGA is among the top economic generators in New York and parts of New Jersey. LaGuardia airport contributes up to $15.6 Billion in the economy of New York City and the US (La Guardia, 2016). The airport is among the registered taxpayers, which also funds the economic activities in the city of New York.
The airport creates direct and indirect employment in the USA. According to LaGuardia data chart of 2015, the airport has employed more than 11,000 citizens. The employees include the pilots, the engineers’ cleaners, securities and attendants among other employees (Humphreys & Ison, 2005). The airport has created about 116, 000 jobs in the United States.

These careers are direct while others are indirect. For example, the contracts and direct employment which pays salary. According to La Guardia (2016), the financial statements of LaGuardia airport show that the airport spends about $5.7 billion per year on salary and wages.
Furthermore, the existence of LaGuardia airport has also facilitated the growth of other businesses. For instance, the taxi and other transport companies rely on passengers to and from the airport to generate income. The hotels and restaurant around the airport and those within LGA premises depend on airport customers to make profits (La Guardia, 2016).
LaGuardia provides the fastest means of transport in and out of New York. More rapid means of transport means a more rapid transportation of goods for traders. Faster transportation reduces chances of perishing goods. For example, flowers which are highly perishable can efficiently be carried to its required destination and save on losses associated with delays and expirations (Ch=9 ECONOMIC, 2016).
Social Roles
The existence of LGA increases security in the area. LaGuardia airport operates on the daily basis for twenty for hours on each day (Le, Donohue, Hoffman, & Chen, 2008). With the consistency of operation, the area is freed from the curfew. The airport securities also affect the surrounding and the airport premises as the management of LGA ensures passengers safety; the environment also reaps the benefits of tight security provided by the airport.
Through transportation, the airport enhances integration among communities (Ch=9 ECONOMIC, 2016). People from a different culture can interact and share important values. This provision increases national and international integration. Air transport provided by LGA facilitates access to remote areas. Faster access to such zones encourages the movement of investors and further promotes development (Le, Donohue, Hoffman, & Chen, 2008).
The airport as a transport center also attracts large crowds towards the airport, either for business or transportation reason thus unity of different people (Roh, 2013). The existence of airport also promotes education and the value of teaching through the facilitation of research and providing a forum for practical studies for the aviation students and schools around LaGuardia.
Political Roles
Nations with several airports specifically the international airports are said to be politically powerful (Ch=9 ECONOMIC, 2016). This information is reliable since it takes political might to maintain the safety and daily operations of such airports. United States Army and forces can use LaGuardia airport as a landing base during wars with other nations. The availability of landing space and military jets contribute to the political might of a country.
LaGuardia is an extensive public enterprise in New York City and some parts of New Jersey. It supports the government of New York through taxes. Taxes paid by LaGuardia airport consist of figures relevant to finance major government projects. LaGuardia is among the major enterprises in the New York, which helps in maintaining the country economic stability, which is essential for any state and government (Yuan, Low, & Ching Tang, 2010).
Furthermore, the airport also facilitates administrative patrol in the city. A police patrol that uses helicopters sometimes uses LaGuardia landing space and facilities to enhance the security of the New York City. The airport also provides the security system, which prevents entry of weapons in the country (Scholz & von Cossel, 2011). The government also relies on airport securities to regulate the entry of terrorists and illegal migration in the United States. The officers ensure that travelers have the required documents to enter the United States. The government has also empowered the airport security to follow legal procedures in deporting illegal migrants in the country.
LaGuardia’s role in the New York City and the United States are remarkable. The airport has contributed to the economic, political and social growth in the U.S.
