The importance of academic honesty

Academic honesty is a quality that is expected from any student or professional who is in any school or that has any profession. It must be seen as a set of values and skills that promote personal integrity and good practice in teaching, learning and evaluation. Academic honesty is essential for there to be a good relationship, whether between student and teacher or between worker, colleague and boss. In other words, academic integrity is a fundamental value, since, through the honest end of academic work, students, in turn, can maintain the integrity of the university.

Although complying with established academic honesty policies may seem easy, it is very common to become academically dishonest, since many people do not have a good knowledge of what said academic honesty implies. For example, many students may forget to quote an author in a paragraph of an essay, and although it was not their intention to commit plagiar. The key is to be very cautious and know well the laws and codes of the institution. Some situations in which, very often, academic dishonesty is committed are: when a work presented above is delivered, when plagiarism is committed, when one is "copy", when there is falsification of academic materials, when there is a bad representation of documents, and when assignments are sold and/or when they buy assignments.

In the first situation, if a work is delivered that has already been presented above, the consent of the previous instructor must be considered, so that there is no academic dishonesty. This is a very common situation in graduated school, since many students tend to deliver work of past class or high school without taking into account the seriousness of this action. Plagiarism is one of the most common types of academic honesty, since as mentioned above, many students do not have a good idea of how to quote correctly and, therefore, they commit plagiarism by mistake. The "copying" goes hand with plagiar. The bad representation of documents refers to the falsification, alteration or improper use of documents, records, among others. An example of academic dishonesty by falsifying documents is to manufacture reports or documents and falsify the name of an instructor. The last type of academic dishonesty, which could be common in graduated school, is the sale and purchase of assignments. The stressful student life and the economic need of many leads them to that business.

In a study by Roberts, Anderson and Yanish, the relationship between demographic variables and academic dishonesty between university students was examined. A total of 422 students completed a 27 -item survey that was designed to measure their participation in 17 types of academic misconduct. In addition, the survey obtained data on class position, age, gender, GPA and university specialization. The results revealed that being a man under 24 was correlated with a higher level of academic dishonesty. In other words, men looked with the social pressure that they have to be successful in everything they propose, and, therefore, do whatever (and.g. academic dishonesty) to achieve such success.

No one or any institution is exempted from academic dishonesty and Ivy League University of Harvard is alive example of this. During the last 7 years there have been many situations in which the students of said University commit plagiarism in the works or “copy” in the exams. In 2012, it is thought that half of the students in an introduction class to Congress were "copied" in their final exams. Another example is when famous figures commit work dishonesty;An example of this is when Melania Trump committed plagiarism in 2016 and "Copy" from a speech by Michelle Obama. When powerful institutions, such as Harvard, and famous figures, as is the wife of the president of the United States, they behave in that way (committing either academic or work dishonesty), these types of dishonesty are seen with less serious and asSomething more casual. 

These behaviors perpetuate a cycle that have repercussions on other institutions and work where people take the idea that behaving in that way is not so harmful. The reality of the situation is that, as mentioned above, academic dishonesty is very harmful for both the individual and the institution. This dishonesty does not always happen on purpose, but sometimes because of ignorance, so this is very important to know the different types of academic and labor dishonesty in order to avoid them. This education will benefit both the institution/work, as well as the student/worker and academic/labor honesty will provide a more harmonious work/work environment.
