Abstract
The Roman Empire is unquestionably one of the greatest empires that have ever existed. The ancient roads, palaces, forts, and villas can all be attributed to their rule and development activities. The Romans also instilled in the previously pagan Britons religion, language, technology, planning skills, and identity. The Romans were a little selfless when they were putting up structures and networks because they used the latest designs of the time, technology, and materials. Furthermore, the Romans did not leave on a bad note but only because they had to protect their own land. The Hadrian’s Wall was one of the most prominent pieces of the Roman military. The Romans had a military legacy comprising superior armor, tactics, and weapons that had never been seen by the natives. The towns that came up also promoted the adoption of the Roman culture. It was expected that if you lived in the Roman towns, you take up their practices and even become a Roman citizen. Debates have ensued on the effect that the Roman Empire had on Britain. Various individuals have considered the rule of the roman over the Britons as dictatorial and against their sovereignty as a people while others think that it was necessary for the British in developing their political, economic and social structure. In this case, this paper seeks to analyze the effect of the Roman Empire to Britain; was it positive or negative?
The Roman Empire established a great impact in the places they ruled in the world.

They left Britain in AD410 because Rome was being attacked and they had to go and fight back the attackers. Before they left, they had formed frontiers which marked places that cultures, languages, and religions mixed. Their exit left Britain in chaos as invaders and the native tribes fought each other for power. Most of the towns that had been created by the Romans crumbled down leaving most of the people with the only an option of retiring back to the rural areas. However, many other things remained such as a new faith, plants, towns, animals, practices of reading and above all, their own Name-Britain which originated from Romans. The Roman Empire had the massive positive effect on Britain both socially, economically and politically.
The Roman had constructed over 16,000km in Britain before they left. Their roads were straight and built on strong foundations of gravel, clay, stones, and chalk. In terms of religion, the Romans at first let the Britons worship their traditional gods but later Emperor Constantine allowed them to follow Christianity or worship the Roman emperor according to their preferences (McDowall, 1989). Romans introduced writing and reading in Britain in the language known as Latin. This, however, reached the own residents mostly and left out those in the countryside.
Although there were some cases of intimidation and coercion to adhere to the rules and practices of the Romans, their positive impact cannot be overlooked. Some of the creations they left behind such as Hadrian’s Wall still act as sites of attraction for tourists of Britain. The Romans in the way set the standards for Britain to develop and it still thrives on the glory of Romans.
