The Three Gorges is considered as the world’s largest power station. It produces 98.8 terawatt hours which are used to meet the power demands for industries in China as well as power up its cities. It spans across River Yangtze found in the province of Hubei in China. It is considered one of the biggest development projects in China with significant social and economic contributions. It is also viewed as a substantial contribution to the production of clean energy as a result of the exploitation of hydroelectric power that is clean and renewable. The dam was developed to increase the efficiency of shipping activities in the river and also help in the prevention of flooding downhill (Mikkelsen n.pag).
Despite the great benefits and development associated with the construction of the dam, there have been major ecological aspects that have created a lot of debate in the world. The disruption of the flow of the river has had implications on, but the designs included large enough floodgates that could allow the flow of fish and nutrients. Another negative attribute is that the dam sits on top of a seismic fault making the area more susceptible to earthquakes which also cause landslides (Mikkelsen n.pag).
It is evident that the dam has both positive and negative attributes, but I believe that the positive characteristics of the dam outweigh the negative. China has been known for massive air pollution caused by the use of coal as fuel (Advantages & Disadvantages of the Three Gorges Dam n.

pag). The development of the dam has, therefore, immensely reduced consumption of coal by more than thirty million tons a year which avoids high emission of vast amounts of greenhouse gases (Advantages & Disadvantages of the Three Gorges Dam n.pag).
