Manufacturing companies need flexibility and efficiency to ensure high volumes of production and lower cost. This helps companies to survive in the highly competitive industry. Workstations are very important in manufacturing and their design needs to ensure that production takes minimal time. The design should ensure that the company achieves automation and optimization, saves space and uses less inventory. LESAT (lean enterprise self-assessment tool) has inherent lean and ergonomic principles which can be applied in designing workstations for assembly lines.
A workstation design embodies placement of tools, materials, and equipment. Operator movements are also routed to eliminate unnecessary movements. Lean workstations focus on the operator by providing safety and workstation ergonomics. Tools, parts, and materials need to be placed strategically for easy access to the operator (Gonçalves and Konstantinos 387). The lean assessment Tool helps to evaluate the performance of a workstation and give an insight on how the company is moving along its lean journey.
The hierarchy of workstation needs demands that lower needs should be satisfied for higher levels to be reached. According to Gonçalves and Konstantinos (388), prioritization is needed to achieve full performance in workstations.
