Areas of Boundaries Regarding Gifts and bartering that are Confusing: A gift is an ancient and global means of showing gratitude, care, or appreciation. Bartering is the reception of services and goods from clients in return for psychological services. Both gifts and battering can violate ethical boundaries by boundary violation or boundary crossing.
Both gifts and bartering the codes of ethics are contradictory. There exist different associations for therapists with their rules and regulations. Regarding gifts, the 2005 ACA codes of ethics allow for acceptance of gifts. The 2001 AAMFT codes of ethics partially allow for that subject to certain grounds while the 2004 NAADC codes of ethics do not allow acceptance of gifts. Some do not even mention gifts, for example, AAPC, APA, and CAPA. In bartering, the 2002 APA code of ethics accepts bartering while the 1999 NASW and 2008 CAMFT codes of ethics do not at all give provision for bartering.
Examples of ethical gifts and bartering
