The debate on the need for students to wear school uniform forms the foundation on a huge topic of discussion among psychologists and scholars. A lot of news stories have been circulating concerning protests by students in middle school, high school, and extending to college. Supporters of school uniforms argue that they help in bridging social barriers between students. This eliminates peer pressure and removes avenues for bullying. They also say that school uniform has contributed positively towards improved academic performance as the primary driver towards implementation of the policy. This discussion shall explore the various logical fallacies being put forward by supporters and those opposing school uniforms.
The discussion shall focus on the analysis of the fallacy on distraction caused by immodest dress. The fallacy arises when one fraction supports what they regard to be a common sense where they advocate for women to dress decently so that no one gets distracted. The solution from the other fraction is fired almost immediately stating that you should not tell girls what to wear; instead, boys should be taught to restrain themselves from staring. Both parties are right in their positions because schools should be teaching their students to restrain themselves from objectifying their classmates. Restrain on the part of the boys is equally as important as dressing modestly for girls.
In summary, the debate on the need for students to wear school uniform forms the foundation on a massive topic of discussion among psychologists and scholars.
