Philosophical Analysis of the Movie, The Matrix
The movie, The Matrix is described as a movie of philosophical views. Once a person reads in between the lines, they definitely see ideas that relate to real life situations. For instance, the movie has an aspect of Socratic irony in a common occurrence in the real world. It also showcases willful ignorance an act that many people apply in real life. Similarly, the fictional character of the oracle is evident in the film. Therefore, this paper highlights willed ignorance, Socratic irony, and Oracle as they have been used in the film The Matrix.
The movie has the main character of an oracle which is a female priest who gives people wise and mysterious advice from the gods since she is more familiar with the subject at hand. The character is seen in Sofia Foster as she tries to give advice to the human beings trying to fight the matrix. However, her foreseeing power is due to careful calculations she makes regarding a situation, For instance, when she predicts Neo’s choice between the life of Morpheus and his own life(The Wachowski Brothers, The Matrix). The Oracle knew very well that the agents would search for Morpheus just like Neo was looking for “the one” and having seen how Cypher had reacted she predicted what was likely to happen.
The aspect of Socratic irony can as well be seen in the movie which is the way in which a person asking a question pretends to be ignorant so that the person being asked the question answers and therefore exposing his or her own ignorance that is also referred to as duplexity.

With the style, people can know the real character. In the movie, the Socratic irony is seen as the Wachowski brothers postulate separate dominions of consciousness: with the reality of the matrix being stimulated; and the reality of the reality of which what is left is little but an eviscerated, postapocalyptic landscape. Generally, the matrix showcases presumptions of the expectations that are in today and what is likely to happen to in case everything goes at the current pace (The Wachowski Brothers, The Matrix).
The character, Cypher has brought out the aspect of willful ignorance in The Matrix which is the refusal to consider any conflicting information since one desires to maintain their already existing beliefs. His willful ignorance is seen when he is with Agent Smith as he eats the steak. He eats the steak and states that “ignorance is bliss” and also admits that he would want to remember nothing. He goes further to states that he would want to become “an actor” as they perceived as important and rich people which are rather an irony since he is already an actor and even when he returned to the matrix he would act as if he had not seen the real world. Therefore, his return to The Matrix will make him an actor who acts like “an actor” which will make him far from the reality since he would seem to be rich and important in the movie (The Wachowski Brothers, The Matrix Reloaded).
In conclusion, the movie the matrix is a potpourri of philosophical interpretations. In whichever aspect one views it in. The symbolism used in the film will always bring one to the real world. Therefore, the elements of skepticism and double consciousness from the movie, are some of the concepts that should be analyzed in the future.
