Which of the three ethics theories we studied in this course (utility, virtue, or duty ethics) do you think ring most true for students who are enrolled in graduate business programs? Why? Has this class changed the approach you will use for ethics in your future career? If so, explain how.
The three theories of ethics are important and should be inculcated in the day to day lives of business students. However, the virtue ethics stand out as key in influencing learners’ behavior in school and in the outside world. Virtues or virtue ethics mold the students to act morally at their different job roles once employed.
The way one conducts himself or herself at work speaks volumes about their sense of morality. The students’ ethics and behavior later in life as an employer or employee will be critical in determining the fate of the company or organization. Virtuous tendencies help maintain order in the work premises, run the operations effectively, and increase the organizations’ profits. Virtue ethics influence the way people behave at work. Also, virtues such as devotion in your own or group work in school often transcend to student’s career endeavors later in life.
Virtues are also very infective. It is very easy for the student to pass on positive virtues such as kindness and devotion to fellow workers when they move into the corporate world. Finally, yes, the class has changed my view in ethics. I know that as much as utilitarian and duty ethics are important, virtue ethics are the cog in any organizational development. I will value morality higher than other ethics in my future corporate ventures. Virtues such as kindness and devotion will come first in my business ventures before profitability and other duty ethics.
