Othello versus Iago
William Shakespeare’s drama, “Othello, The moor of Venice” presents two main characters, Othello and Iago. The author used the characters for different roles in this play. The difference involves their roles, social class, race and other factors in the drama.
First, Othello is a protagonist, while Iago plays as an antagonist. However, both of them are presented as outsiders in the Venetian society. Whereas Othello feels like an outsider because of the color of his skin, Iago feels like an outsider because of social class. Iago believes that he can achieve more in the society where others are richer than him. In the play, “Othello, the Moor of Venice,” Othello is the moor that meant he belonged to Arab origin, but Shakespeare presents Iago as the native of Venice. Othello performed as an admirable hero to the people. He is also noble and has traits that are presentable to people. However, Iago is a jealous man and a villain who cannot be controlled. Iago and Othello are military and deserve respect in the society.
Even though Othello was presented as a noble character, he also possesses similar characteristics an Iago. Othello is an insecure man and does not consider himself worthy in a society that he looks different from the others. Despite his surety that Desdemona loved him, “Had eyes and chose me,” Othello is still manipulated by the jealous Iago to lose trust in his love, Desdemona (Shakespeare, Othello, The Moor of Venice).

Similarly, Iago also portrays insecurity when he feels inferior to Casio who was promoted ahead of him. He decides to follow Casio to “serve my turn upon him,” Iago is planning revenge against Casio (Shakespeare, Othello, The Moor of Venice).
Therefore, the two characters Iago and Othello possess similar and contrasting roles in Shakespeare’s play “Othello, the Moor of Venice.”
