Major Events in pre-20th Century England
This paper is based on analysing and discussing the various events that led to security development in the pre-20th century England. The article also focuses on the events that happened in the United States and contributed to the development of private security. The paper will focus on the phase of evolution that has enhanced security in both England and the United States. Private security is also discussed exclusively plus the factors that ensured its development. Most of the events described in this paper happened majorly in the eighteenth and nineteenth century.
There are four phases of evolution in security which are known as the Reith’s 4 phases. These stages include,
The search for collective security
Need for rules and laws
Some people would not obey laws
The means to compel observance of the rules.
The separation of public and private security featured in the 19th century. The evolution of private security was enhanced by the quest for improved personal protection of the human beings as well as their possessions. In the ancient times, people used physical things such as gates, weapons, walls and cliff dwellings to provide security for themselves. The rulers would appoint people to offer them with security; this leads to the evolution of the early police. The ancient protection systems were followed by the Frankpledge system CITATION Hal03 l 2057 (Halsall, 2003). This system involved making all the Englishmen whore were free to swear a peace allegiance.

Laws were then created for the modern justice for the people of England.
In the eighteenth century, there was more crime in the cities that was brought about by the industrial revolution. Due to increased crimes, there was improved private policing, use of the military for suppressing riots, use of magistrate systems and advocates of preventing crime. There was also the development of detective agencies. There was the establishment of the Pitt’s Reform bill that leads to the establishment of an able police department. The police force was made larger and also contributed to the private security agencies. A metropolitan police act was created by Sir Robert Peels in the quest for prevention of crime. The objective of this metropolitan police is to prevent crime and maintain order. The system was also meant to test the efficiency of the police department CITATION Sre04 l 2057 (Sreedharan, 2004).
The evolution of the private security in the US started with US-constables and watchmen for the night. The first police forces in the United States came to effect in the 1800s. The private railroad security followed suit, to prevent crime in the railway. Pinkerton developed these contract security forces. Burglar alarm systems were also developed to enhance private securities at home. These systems were developed around 1853. Later, there was the establishment of central monitoring systems and armored cars CITATION But07 l 2057 (Button, 2007). Brink designed armored vehicles and courier services. These systems were followed by the establishment of a Detective Agency by Agency. Fear of espionage and sabotage during the world wars also led to the strengthening of private security. Private security was enhanced during the First and Second World War. Significant improvements, however, became visible in the Second World War which improved not #only private safety but also the government security and security of plants in the industries.
A summary of the factors that improved the development of private security includes, increase in the governmental regulations and police being unable to provide sufficient protection to the public. These problems were solved by measures like installing security systems in houses and philosophies on private security.
