Even the Rain is a Spanish drama film released on the 14th of October 2010 in Los Angeles, USA. The movie was directed by Icíar Bollaín and the screenplay written by Paul Laverty. Mandarin Cinema and Morena Films produced it. It received the Goya award for being the best in three categories; production supervision, original score and supporting actor. This paper presents a review of the film Even the Rain.
Movie Summary
This movie opens up when a film crew, including Sebastian, a Spanish director, his executive producer called Costa and others are in the Cochabamba region of Bolivia. They are shooting a film about the first explorations of Christopher Columbus and the treatment of the Indians by Spaniards during this time. Costa, the executive producer, preferred to shoot the movie in this area because the film’s budget was tight and the area’s cost of living could allow him to hire cheap extras, supernumeraries, and local actors. The shooting proceeds smoothly but is soon interrupted by a conflict that arises over a plan to privatize the area’s water supply. One of Costa’s local actors plays a lead role in the protests against the privatization. The demonstrations increase in intensity until the whole community erupts into violence which is presently known as the Bolivian Water War.
Movie Analysis
Whereas the movie’s concept may sound schematic, I think the screenwriter Paul Laverty brings it into vivid life through wonderful characterization.

The main character, Costa, undergoes a dramatic transformation from a man who does not care about the locals to a socially awakened man who risks his life by driving a wounded female protestor to the hospital. The screenwriter beautifully renders Costa’s gradual moral awakening in the script. The screenwriter also uses a wonderful characterization of Daniel, who plays the role of the leader of rebels and another parallel role in the film-within-the-film of an Indian tribesman who the conquering Spaniards oppress. Despite Daniel’s oppression, the screenwriter presents him as remarkably unaffected. Laverty also gives the other characters’ rich dimensions by portraying them as narcissistic individuals with satiric flair.
I also think the film’s director has succeeded in enriching Even the Rain’s survey of colonialism over the ages. This survey of colonialism is enhanced in the movie through the use of sequences from the historical epic of the film-within-the-film. The rioting scenes are also edited to present a frightening sense of urgency.
Despite the movie being a hard punch, I think an overly schematic screenplay coupled with excess conceptual baggage serve to diminish its impact. It involves an unnecessary layer that presents the filming of a documentary about the film’s making. I am also of the view that the movie, consciously or not, runs the risk of undermining its goodwill. While it is intended to portray the oppressive treatment of Indians by the Spaniards during Christopher Columbus’ time, the makers of the film depict a present-day oppressive treatment of the Indians through exploitation. Viewers of the movie cannot help but wonder the degree to which the makers of Even the Rain exploited the Bolivian locals recruited as extras to play the role of 16th-century Indians.
Conclusion
The makers of the movie Even the Rain successfully drew comparisons between modern globalization and European imperialism fifty decades ago. The film particularly portrays high-end filming on location in economically disadvantaged countries as an extension of colonial exploitation.
