1. Re-imagination, Prelude to the afternoon of a faun
An arrangement in the setting of 18 pieces jazz orchestra. Claude Debussy is one of my favorite composers, and I am deeply inspired by his composition Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune. In the original composition, Debussy did a perfect illustration of Mallarme’s poem. However, my inspiration for writing this arrangement were the feelings of me hearing the piece time after time in the Symphony Hall in Boston, one of the most famous music venue in the States. I felt the entire orchestra is moving along with the motifs, as it develops, I deeply felt the passion underneath the liner movements and modulations. Therefore, I took the main motif of the composition, and combined with other ten musical phrases from the original, mixed them up and assign them to different instrument sections and develop them into a complete arrangement. I believe that even in the calmest place, there’s passion underneath, waiting for the brilliant break out. ‘ Such as a forest in grey, a lake in blue, a flower on fire. I always want to say something that can’t be said out loud, but they exist all the time, from the past to the future. Wondering back and forth, a soul of me drowning oneself, running a circulation of escapism. This is not a voice that can represent the mainstream but can peep the real oneself. This is not an emotion can be expressed easily, but always shows in everyone‘s dream. Hopefully, you can see those scenes. We all going further and further in the deepest of the dream, and arrive at the same destination after waking up. [Lyrics] Past, can’t back to the past Yesterday, slowly passed Blossoms, and fireworks Exchanging, longer while shorter Let’s dance, dance for the restraint Can’t jump out of the grid Staying in the geest Picnic, going beyond the wall You can fly if you could flee Squandering, screaming I need to escape The broken, the burnt All faded Ah… You too Don’t stop, don’t stop You too, do not stop Just fall Fall 3. L’amantA chamber music composition contains one piccolo, one flute, one trumpet, one trombone, one alto sax, one clarinet, one tenor sax, one baritone sax, one bass clarinet and a bass bassoon. The title ‘L’amant’ means ‘The Lover’ in French. I wanted to express the secretive feelings of adore that between two people. A mixture of romantic fantasies, passions and the sadness of forcing oneself hide the feelings. The motif I used in A section, aiming to describe the beauty of two-people falling love with each other, as it developed, the feeling grows stronger and stronger into B section, however, both of them choose to hide their feelings, keeping love silent isn’t an easy thing to do, as the notes go staccato, it brings pain to us. The swing section represents a staggered love and hate, as the alto sax improvising, just like we can’t take everything in control when we fall in love, things go wild as it developed. The heart is beating even faster, underneath the passion, is the sorrow of the secret love. With the screaming of the flute, we are back to the beauty of the first sight, with a little bit of funny from the bassoon and trumpet, the secrecy and struggles ended with the dissonance flat nine interval. [Flute] Julie Almer [Trumpet] Jeric Rocamora [Trombone] Dorsey J Minns [Alto Sax & Clarinet] Billy Young [Tenor Sax] Wuxian Wen [Baritone Sax] Kamil Jan [Bass Clarinet] Isabelle Sufler [Composer/Conductor] Jiahui Ge 4. The lyrics are aiming to tell the complexed feelings of a 22-year-old girl, who wants to be independent, feeling satisfied with the present, being mature and childish at the same time, trying to bring uplift energy by this production and lyrics. [Lyrics] The season of blossoms, the fragrance of leaves, oh another spring The smell of perfume Lost the freshness of roses by the street Almost children’s day Not allowed to receive gifts anymore Obsessions still, specialness under the protection The priorities? Not gonna be the exception. I like it Just like now Simple, natural, tenderly I got this There’s future Disappointments bring expectations Grown-up give promises Say too many things But did nothing The temptation of the bread Almost break my persistence Oh on my tiptoes Still, have a long way to go to be the one I wanted to be Obsessions still, specialness under the protection The priorities? Not gonna be the exception. I like it Take it slowly Too many dreaming waiting to be true I got this Those transforms Hard-working as you will see Eye Almost 22-year-old, I still got too much homework to do But I remember all my memories Those immature spending I still need to pay for The crows just awkwardly flew past Yup, I cruised to victory over every difficulty My words are like textbook printed, but you never read them It is a good workman that never blunders Those colorful candies I wanna take one more So Cash me outside how about that? The next Halloween Let’s play trick or treat again Snow White doesn’t only represent dignity Cinderella’s high heels are so tiring too Just throw out the umbrella and rain shoes Enjoy the raindrops Let’s collapse
5. Youth
A jazz composition for solo piano. I wrote this piece dedicated to my piano teacher, Ross Ramsay. Mr. Ramsay is a professor in Berklee College of Music Piano Department, he is over 50 years old, and however, he always gives me a feeling of him still in his mid-20s. Not just the piano techniques that he taught me, he also told me a lot of real-life stories that made me a better person. There was a period that when I was in college, I was scared of future and wasn’t sure about the faith of my dreams, professor Ramsay told me that a lot of people don’t know what to do when they are in their 20s, but no matter how lost we are, we shouldn’t stop searching for our life purposes and sometimes it is better for us to accept this feeling of being confused, the realization is actually the motivation for us to keep going and fighting for a better dream. This is a production that I co-produced while I was working in the Esoteric Sound Studio in Brooklyn, New York after graduating from college. [Composer/Lyrics] Kflir [Producer] Pablo San Martin [Co-Producer/Recording Engineer] Jiahui Ge 8. Target Spot
A song performed by a Beijing based independent artist, Michael Yu. This is the first production that I produced as the main producer while I was working in the Esoteric Sound Studio in Brooklyn, New York. The song expressed Michael’s thoughts about an unwanted love relationship; he feels like he isn’t treated like a person but a wanted target in a first-person shooter game. Therefore, I used a lot of percussive guitar riffs and percussions, with the extension by strings and vocal chops to express the crisis awareness. [Composer/Lyrics] Michael Yu [Producer/Recording Engineer] Jiahui Ge 9. Se tu m’amiA classical vocal piece performed by me. [Vocal/Recording Engineer] Jiahui Ge [Piano] Xu Guo
