Learning foreign languages is a waste of time
Nowadays, the life of human beings is heavily influenced by the modern technologies. Modern people can barely imagine their lives without all of the progress that computer science has given them. Because computers make people’s lives easier, many of them have found new excuses for being lazy. For example, there is an opinion that learning foreign languages is pointless, as computers can translate quickly and accurately. However, I disagree with this point of view, and I have significant reasons to prove mine.
Creation of artificial intelligence has taken much time from the scientists. They have been trying to develop an accurate translator that will help many people conquer a language barrier; but even after the years of the hard work, it is still not possible to do a precise translation, including the proper context. Computers translate sentences word-to-word, which sometimes makes it hard to understand the original meaning of this sentence. It is possible to get a vague translation, but without knowing small details that people usually find out in the process of learning a language, it will be hard to understand a language, especially from the mouth of a native speaker.
What is more, learning a foreign language can make you more aware of a culture of this language and unique features of the natives. Culture is an essential part of every country’s history. As the country has been developing, the language and the culture have been evolving along with it.

Sure, maybe shortly, people will find a way to make machines understand the context accurately. By now, it is nearly impossible, and many people highly doubt that science can make the computer understand human emotions. Emotions are precisely what makes us human beings. The same sentence, but said with an expression of two different emotions might have a crucial difference in meaning, depending on the emotion. There are even languages, where the ton of speech defines what a word means, so it is easy to mistaken two words that look identical but have entirely different meanings.
Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk – Czech politician, sociologist and philosopher once said, “As many languages you know, as many times you are a human being” (Ager, n/p). This quote supports the opinion about why learning languages is essential. Just how traveling broadens your mind, learning a foreign language can extend your worldview. Every nation views the world differently, so learning the language with all its unique features might open a whole new world for you, change your perception of some things for the better. Moreover, computers cannot teach a person new cultures and provide true unforgettable feelings of interaction with the outer world.
The science has not yet come to a place where computers can substitute a human brain. No artificial intelligence can replace the feeling of talking to the speaker of another language and realizing that you two have a connection, even though you are from two different countries, or even from the opposite parts of the world. The best part about reading a book in the original language is that you do not have to think that the authentic meaning of this paperwork was interpreted differently with the translation. The learning of a foreign language will open a new world of opportunities for you, including traveling, communicating and educating yourself to be a better human being.
