I was part of a malaria governance research team in the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reference laboratory comparing the efficacy of two ant malarial drugs against the Plasmodium falciparum, the malaria parasite which causes the most severe form of the disease, in children(Flannery et al.,2013). There were reports of the rise of multidrug-resistant malaria parasites in the Asian and African continents, and the world health organization was researching to compare the efficacy of a novel ant malarial drug against those already in the market.
Our governance team constituted of myself who took the lead, and I was the chief laboratory officer, the senior pediatrician, the chief epidemiologist, the senior statistician, chief pharmacist, and the chief nutritionist (Raghupathi and Raghupathi, 2014). The research involved determining the efficacy of the drugs regarding: parasite clearance time, effects of the drugs on the hemoglobin levels, and side effects. The physician and I came up with study design and its protocol. Moreover, the epidemiologist and the statistician aided in identifying the endemic malaria regions and the calculations of the number of the target population respectively.
