Personal essay on leadership following Act 1 of Hamlet
Hamlet is a unique book which caught a lot of attention from the public since its publication to date due to its relevant content reflecting the society and the operations of all aspects. Moreover, it depicts real issues that affect people both politically and socially, giving probable lessons that address these predicaments. In this context, we will focus more particularly on Act 1 of the book to drive main themes that can be related to our personal lives.
The scene begins where Bernardo, an officer, decides to replace Francisco, the watchman on duty and is later joined by Marcellus, who is another guard together with Horatio who is Hamlet’s friend. However, Horatio claims to bid them, but they both insist him to remain promising to show him something new. Later, a ghost appears scaring Horatio, who never seemed to believe before. The ghost is seen to be King Hamlet who died a few days ago. They try to talk to the ghost, but it never responds back. Nonetheless, Horatio vows to speak to Prince Hamlet who, believing that the ghost might talk to him.
King Claudius, the current King, is introduced to the scene, giving a speech about marrying Gertrude, who was Hamlet’s wife. He proudly says he mourns his brother but has decided to balance by marriage. He acts ambiguously showing how an antagonist he is through his poor leadership. Prince Hamlet is seen dressed in mourning clothes which make the king insult him to stop mourning his dead father but to get over it.

Prince Hamlet is annoyed by this, showing his hatred to his uncle since the power was forcefully taken away from him. Horatio comes in and informs him about the previous ordeal. Later, the ghost appears that night and talks to Hamlet to avenge King Claudius since he killed his father according to the ghost. The scene act ends Helmet promising the ghost to obey him. Also, he orders Horatio and Marcellus not to reveal the secret.
The theme of the complexity of action is embraced in this scene. It focuses on acts committed by Hamlet’s character of being reasonable and being different from the rest of the kingship since he differs with his uncle’s leadership. However, he seems to act emotionally, recklessly and blindly. Besides, King Claudius acts maliciously depicting popular characters seen in our today’s politicians. Consequently, he is corrupt and uses his power to manipulate other people. Moreover, the speech he delivers is considered to be poisonous, which is equivalent to the method he uses to kill his brother, Hamlet.
In the real society today, many political leaders have self-motives to gain power. Some leaders, even kill their opponents to increase their chances of winning. Moreover, those in authority can do anything to retain it. The majority uses power to get want they want. Also, the common members of the society have been blackmailed through manipulation and being brainwashed.
Beliefs about evil spirits and ghosts have been in existence since immemorial. Different cultures have different assumptions and take about ghosts. Mostly, Africans used to perform rituals long time ago, so that to please the spirits. Most characters in this book tend to believe in the ghost with thoughts as a sign of bad omen to their kingship.
In conclusion, these problems depicted in the play such as poor leadership, corruption, misuse of power, manipulation, persecution, and selfishness are the biggest challenges faced in our society today. It’s, therefore, everybody’s obligation to ascertain that we elect good leaders and also have one voice to stop egocentric leaders to ensure achievement of every sector is enhanced.
