Discussion Post: Same-Sex Marriage
In many ways, I support the arguments presented in this post. First, individuals attracted to same sex should be awarded equal rights to heterosexuals. Given the fact that the personal and societal values are evolving fast, it is wise for individuals to acknowledge the differences in sexual preferences and respect the choices of others. Same-sex couples should, therefore, get the opportunity to enjoy equal rights like in the other marriages. The US government has established legislative and judicial frameworks that uphold human dignity and guarantee equal rights for homosexuals. For instance, Finck (2016) notes that many state courts have promoted equality in marriages by putting into consideration not only the dignity of heterosexual people but also the homosexual couples. The courts ruled that opposing same-sex union was a way of demeaning the dignity of the involved persons. These judicial adjustments have also influenced the perception of the public towards gay and lesbian marriages. Personally, I believe I am living in an era where people have the freedom to pursue their hearts’ desires, contrary to the past decades where people conformed to societal norms.
Second, I support the argument that religious institutions have a right to oppose gay and lesbian marriages because the practice is contrary to their doctrines. For instance, Christians believe that God created man and woman for companionship and procreation.

They, therefore, think that any other form of marriage that is not between man and woman is sinful and contrary to God’s will. For this reason, religious leaders have a responsibility to uphold their doctrines and show a good example to their followers.
Third, I agree with the idea that religious beliefs and values regarding marriage should only apply to the institution and the followers should not discriminate against same-sex couples in other institutions. For instance, it is unfair for a Christian issuing marriage license to treat homosexual couples with disrespect because of their sexual preference. Thus, it is essential for everyone to adjust their attitude towards a contemporary issue such as homosexuality since every person has a right to live a quality life and the freedom to choose their sexual and romantic partners.
