1. TEMPO Directions: Tap your pencil to the background BEAT of the song. (Recall that the BEAT is a steady, regular pulse – what you would step to if you were walking, running, or dancing to the music). Count the number of beats that you tap in 20 seconds of the music. For example, if I’m watching the time dial on the recording, I’ll start tapping the beat at 0:10 and count the number of beats until 0:30. Multiply this number by 3, and you will get the number of beats in 60 seconds (number of beats per minute – BPM).
Number of BEATS in 60 seconds:
120 beats per minute.
Is this a FAST tempo, MODERATE tempo, SLOW tempo?
Fast tempo
2. MELODY Directions: If someone were to ask you, “how does that song ‘go?’” You would sing or hum or whistle the most memorable part of the song to them.

Wait! please see files attached paper is just an example!

Hum the most memorable part of your song to yourself. Now find the TIMING on the counter (e.g., 0:24) when we first hear this memorable part in the song.
TIMING of the first occurrence of the “most memorable” part of the song:
1:14
List the lyrics that accompany this part of the song (full lyrics to the song can usually be found in a quick online search):
“Just shoot for the stars if it feels rightAnd aim for my heart if you feel like itTake me away and make it okay.”I swear I’ll behave.”
3. FOREGROUND RHYTHM Directions: Hum this “most memorable” part of the song to yourself again.
Are the notes that you generally hum short or long? (e.g., in punk rock or rap, the length of the notes generally shorter. In a slow RnB song, the notes are longer (to take more time on each of the words): The notes are short
Find the longest note of this “most memorable” part of the song. List the WORD that the singer sings on this longest note:
In “Just shoot for the stars if it feels rightAnd aim for my heart if you feel like itTake me away and make it okay.”I swear I’ll behave” star and heart receive the longest notes for example. “Just shoot for the staaaars if it feels rightAnd aim for my heeeaaart if you feel like itTake me away and make it okay
I swear I’ll behave.”
4. TIMBRE/TONE COLOR Directions: List some of the prominent instrumental ‘colors’ that you hear in the song. Don’t worry about trying to identify every little instrument, just the main things that jump out at you (and, don’t forget the SINGER(s)!).
The female singer is “Christiana Aguilera” male singer is Maroon 5. Maroon 5 sings the largest part as he sings A and B section twice before Christiana Aguilera joins for C section. Instruments used include drums and a guitar, drums being the loudest. When the song begins the only instruments heard are the drums, then the guitars are later introduced. The B section of the song through the guitars are a bit loud than the A section. Towards the end of the song, the whistle is introduced.
INSTRUMENTS/VOICES:
Describe the quality of the lead singer’s voice (e.g., is it rough or smooth? High-pitched or low-pitched (Soprano, bass, etc.):
The lead singer is Maroon 5, and his voice is high pitched for a male singer. His voice is smooth throughout the song though.
5. FORM Directions: Popular songs typically have 2-3 distinct sections of music. These sections are repeated at least once. While the repetition of a section of music occurs later in the piece, it’s not really “new” music (or a new section), since it’s essentially the same (same melodies, harmonies) as the first time we heard it. The section of music usually referred to as the “chorus,” is repeated more than once with the same music as well as the same lyrics. The section of music usually known as the “verse,” features the same music, but with different lyrics with each repetition. Note that even though the lyrics are different, the music is more or less the same.
How many distinct sections of music do you hear in this piece?
The song has three distinct sections.
List the timing of the first section of music (A) (usually at the very beginning, or after a short little introduction to get a groove going):
The song starts at 1.14 with the words “Just shoot for the stars if it feels right.” However, it is introduced by drum beats in the middle of a conversation at 0.47. The conversation disappears leaving the drum beats just before the song start.
List the timing for the first time you hear a NEW, contrasting section of music (B):
At 00:47 is where there is a new contrasting section which is the beginning of the chorus. The chorus has two stanzas one that starts with the words “Take me by the tongue, and I’ll know you” and the second stanza that starts with “I don’t need to try to control you.”
List the timing of the second time that you hear the “A section”:
The A section is repeated at 2.15. The lyrics are completely different, but it is the same music as at 0:47.
List the timing of the second time that you hear the “B section”:
The two stanzas of the chorus which make part two are repeated at 2:47 and again at 3:47
If there are more than two sections of music, list the first line of the lyrics for each of these sections and indicate the timing that they occur in the song:
The song has a third section which is started by Christiana Aguilera with the words “You want to know how to make me smile” at 3:16. The first two sections which are repeated twice are sung by Maroon 5 alone then Christiana Aguilera comes at the 3rd section. They then repeat B section together at 3:47 just before the song ends with short whistles.
