Reader Response to Counterpoint: Stop painting others with a broad (racial) brush.
Kao’s analysis of Amy Harth’s article on racial discrimination is comprehensive and exhaustively written. You start the review with an attentive observation on the 1st paragraph, page 1, that the article was published a day after the president had addressed a similar issue. You quote the article’s thesis on the introductory paragraph, which informs the audience on the topic of discussion right from the get-go.
Your narrative skills are commendable, with proper use of relevant direct quotes throughout the analysis. As seen on the 2nd paragraph on page three, the direct quote “I wish she’d taken a deep breath and had a calm conversation with me, the human being standing before her, apologizing for my cluelessness, which had nothing to do with the color of her skin” (Harth) augured well with the article’s thesis. The analysis is exhaustive, looking at the article in its entirety and showing a good synthesis of the author’s intention. A clear demonstration of synthesis can be seen on the 1st paragraph, page 5, when you write “This rebuttal establishes that Harth feels like the motives of a person are what create racism and discrimination, not the one’s identity or race.” The analysis also defines an argumentative position towards the end. In the concluding paragraph on page 7, you argue that “Having a civil conversation with others who do not feel the same way as such, will not result in finding common ground and peace immediately.

Wait! Rhitorical Analysis reader response paper is just an example!

Your thoughts follow a logical order, and you show good organization in your analysis. You correctly point out the article’s lack of logos in the 2nd paragraph on page 6. However, I feel that your example of ethos in paragraph 1 on page 1 is inaccurate, where you say “She accomplishes this purpose by mainly appealing to ethos through describing her personal view on discrimination in addition to her personal experiences.” The author’s personal view in the article indicates the use of pathos to appeal to her audience’s emotions. A better indication of ethos would have been to comment on the author’s credibility to speak on the subject, like referring to her profession for instance. I feel you overused the direct citations in the analysis. Perhaps you would have elected to paraphrase the excerpts. An altogether well-written analysis that served its purpose comprehensively.
