Walls, in her memoir, discusses adversity and turning disadvantages into advantages through the choice of stories she tells. She tells stories of her poverty-stricken childhood. She recounts moving from one neighborhood to another with her siblings, alcoholic father and free sprinted mother CITATION Irv12 l 2057 (Irvin, 2012). ‘We moved around like nomads. We lived in dusty little mining towns in Nevada, Arizona, and California (Wall, 2005, 11). In her memoir, she explains how her parents were too lazy and self-absorbed to look for descent jobs to support the family. Although her stories are heart-breaking, the author remains calm and views her youth hood in a comical light. She views her experiences through transparent walls ‘in the glass castle’ and remembers how the struggles encouraged and strengthened her to be more determined to succeed.
Although Walls goes through a challenging upbringing, she is optimistic as she accepts her past and creates a better future for herself. Walls and her siblings had to deal with their alcoholic dad who ruined the things they loved and worked hard to get. ‘No one tried to wring dad’s neck or yell at him or even point out that he had ruined the Christmas his family had spent weeks planning’ (Wall, 2005, 115). Living with irresponsible parents taught walls on the importance of being responsible as a parent.W alls explains how they were responsible for their mother even though she was supposed to be the responsible one.

‘It was up to Lori, Brian and me to get out of bed and see to it that she was dressed and at school on time (Wall, 2005, 74).
In conclusion, Walls no matter the hardships she endures learns to depend on herself and never blames anyone. She, however, accepts her past and decides to share her darkest moment to express how it feels to experience freedom. She explains that a daughter should be grateful to her parents and anyone can tell stories of their past without fear that they will be discriminated or humiliated.
