The Theme of Loneliness

Loneliness in the chrysanthemums and the Worn Path is clearly presented by the authors who portray some characters as not performing fully in accordance to their abilities. The chrysanthemums indicate Elisa, a character who faces relationship problems while trying to explore her natural abilities. In the worn path, old Jackson is seen travelling to the city to get her grandson medication. She passes through lonely woods that almost endanger her life. The two women are energetic and strong-willed but are oppressed and lonely due to their circumstances which they desire to change.
As the story begins in the chrysanthemum, Elisa Allen is seen working on her garden alone. The region where she is working is also isolated from other farms and there is a high fog which can be seen from a distance. The place is depicted as lifeless as the author tries to make people peep through for small evidences of existence. The cold season also makes the region lifeless as the characters are busy working in their ranch. The whole story is about the famous tribulation that most relationships undergo. There is total isolation and loneliness among the characters and the region itself.
Elisa is secluded from the rest of the world, and only becomes busy by watching the activities of her husband from a far as there are little activities to be undertaken in the ranch. Elisa’s household also lacks children who often lighten up homes. Instead, she becomes obsessed in raising immense chrysanthemums. Elisa’s husband finally proposes a dinner in town which will be coupled by a movie.

The idea of travelling to the town center lightens up Elisa’s daily routine and the idea of loneliness in overall. The ending for Elisa is not appropriate as she never emerges above her fears even though she experiences some sort of comfort.
In a worn path, Jackson is seen travelling along the woods towards town to get medication for her grandson. Jackson is lonely all the while and only meets with different obstacles as she traverses the woods. Her journey to town is disastrous as she meets various obstacles like bushes, a dog and a barbed wire among many others. Her grandson is also lonely back at home as the grandmother travels to search for medicine. Their realization of how life can become heightens the levels of loneliness among the two characters.
Jackson also travels in lonely forest where she only meets one man who is on his own journey. The old lady has in the past made trips to the city to look for medication; the level of loneliness is, therefore, big than anticipated by the readers. Rural life from where Jackson hails is lonely, as no medication or hospitals are available. The people are forced to travel to the city to get medication and many other amenities. The ending for Jackson is appropriate for the rest of the plot as she is able to achieve the desires of her heart.
In conclusion, the theme of loneliness is clearly depicted in both works. Elisa and Jackson and their families are lonely people who struggle to get happy and make others achieve their dreams. The two women are strong and energetic but live under deplorable conditions which never allow them to explore their abilities fully.
