Bird watching is an exciting activity that is increasing worldwide. You just need some binoculars and a camera to locate and record your findings. It’s as fun as filling an album with figures. Therefore, the number of bird lovers throughout the planet has grown a lot.

Usually, ornithology fans feel a huge taste for walking. They feel wonderfully when they come into direct contact with nature. In Latin America there are privileged spaces for those who enjoy this hobby.

It should be noted that each region has specific ecosystems in which certain types of birds inhabit. In some cases they are unique, giving rise to endemic species, which are not found anywhere else in the world. These are, therefore, the best destinations on the continent for bird lovers.

Colombia, a place for bird lovers

Colombia is the country with the largest diversity of birds in the world. It has 1912 registered species, of which 79 are endemic. Its geographical location and topographic characteristics make the country a true paradise for resident, endemic and migratory birds.

In Colombia there are many regions that can be a true delight for bird lovers. The El Amejal Natural Reserve, in the department of Chocó, is one of the richest, with 800 species.

The Mururito Natural Reserve, in the Department of Meta, has 562 types of different birds. Likewise, the Amacayacu National Park, in the Amazonas, houses more than 460 species.

Finally, the Tatamá Natural National Park, on the coffee axis, is home of 402 species.

Peru, a privileged destination

It occupies the second place of the planet in diversity of birds, with 1879 registered species. This constitutes another wonder for bird lovers. In Peru there are 115 endemic species and 60 migratory species.

In the region of Madre de Dios, the Manu National Park and the Tamopata River stand out, places where up to 500 species can be easily observed. In the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve there are jungle, forest and aquatic birds; It houses in total more than 450 species.

The Paracas National Reserve is characterized by the presence of desert and marine birds. You can find up to 200 species. Finally, in Lake Titicaca aquatic, land and Andean birds are observed, with about 80 species.

Brazil, another paradise for birds

Brazil records 1750 species of birds, of which 200 are endemic. It occupies, therefore, third place in the world. The exuberance of its extensive jungle positions the country as one of the most interesting destinations for bird lovers.

The richest region in birds is the Amazon, which has about 950 species. Starting from its capital, Manaos, it is possible to make tours of areas such as Borba, San Gabriel, Tabatinga and Tefé.

Closed is the second region in importance for bird watching. It houses 837 species and the best places to observe them are Minas Gerais and in Belo Horizonte. Finally, in the Pantanal region, there are 650 species and the best observation sites are in Mato Grosso, at Campo Grande, Cuiabá and Crystalline points.

Ecuador, a little giant

During the last count, made in 2018, Ecuador registered 1618 bird species. This is extraordinary, if the extension of its territory is taken into account. Ecuador is, in this way, one of the unmissable destinations for bird lovers.

The largest amount of birds is located in Podocarpus National Park, where more than 560 species live. It is followed by Mondo, where you can easily register 50 different birds in one day and has 500 species.

Another option is the antisan ecological reserve, which is located in the northern region of the country and has 418 bird species. While south, between Patate and Baños, the waterfall route is located, with more than 400 species.

Bolivia, another place for bird lovers

The registration corresponding to Bolivia in birds is 1437 species. This important figure, if one takes into account that this country has no exit to the sea and this reduces its biodiversity. The most important place to observe birds is the Madidi National Park, which has 867 registered species, although it is believed that there are many more.

In the heart of the Aquicuana reserve is Ecolodge of Pisatahua, which houses around 350 species. In Beni the blue beard nature reserve is located, with more than 300 species of birds, of which several are in danger of extinction.

Finally, 121 species of the country’s most colorful birds are registered in the Red Front. Some of them are only there. It is a region characterized by Andean cliffs and valleys.

Venezuela and birds

This country has registered 1420 species of birds so far, so it is another good destination for bird lovers. With the boom of ecotourism, many livestock haciendas of several thousand hectares promote sighting in Los Llanos.

The Tepui area, located in the southern jungle of Venezuela, is the most biodiverse in the country. There inhabit more than 700 species of birds. Some of the key sites in this region are Puerto Ordaz, El Palmar and South of the Orinoco River.

Henri Pittier National Park, in Aragua state, records more than 500 species. Meanwhile, the San Eusebio cloudy forest, in the state of Mérida, reports 456 bird species and the wildlife refuge of Cuare, around 350.

Mexico, a country of birds

Bird registration in Mexico is 1096 species. Attracts attention that in the same Mexico City it is possible to observe 316 different species. The best places for this activity are the Ajco, the Xochimilco Ecological Park, the Botanical Garden of the UNAM and the Tlalpan forest.

The Mexican State in which you can see the largest number of birds is Oaxaca, 754 species have been registered there. In Lagartos Río it is possible to see up to 395 species and in hot water up to 263 species have been counted.

The Sian Ka´an Biosphere Reserve is a must for bird lovers, with more than 320 species. Meanwhile, the San Blas region, with 7 different types of ecosystems, houses more than 300 species.
