Introduction

Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe’s Fausto work had its first appearance in the year of 1829, many writers tried to represent the legend of the pact with the evil; However, Goethe has been the best representative of him due to the narrative and history he uses, because he allowed the devil to be seen from a different perspective with respect to the works previously presented. 

Fausto is divided into two parts; The first recounts the life of an unsatisfied man who wishes to have more than he has, the incarnation of insatiable ambition in a man named Faust Player of the mind called Mephistopheles; This character so different from the stereotypes about the devil offers Fausto treatment, because he gives him everything necessary for happiness; Like love, youth, power. In the second part he gives him the joy of exploring and conquering new worlds, feeling in his hands a power he never had before.

Developing

The book Fausto is a tragicomedy, as it covers comedy using several resources such as irony and humor, especially for the demon character; The tragedy is represented by the death and misfortune of most of the characters, especially Margarita in the first part and in the second one could say that even Fausto himself attacks him. The comedy is introduced into the work from the construction of the Mephistopheles character, being an individual who, as mentioned above, is a complete jester based on the jokes and jokes of him in the black humor, a demon that does not seem to be.

Adding to the above, Goethe, at the time of writing Fausto, was inspired by other books and mentioned several times that in the works Le Diable Boiteux de Alain-René Le Sage, in Lost Paradise of Milton in 1799, and also the devil fucking of Vélez de Guevara admires how they introduced the same demon and the interesting way in which the authors touched the issue of evil. 

Fausto’s creator, of course, put his own touch by adding characters that are based on people he knew as Margarita, was based on his first love, the young Gretchen; This work was his last job, in which he put all her efforts and effort, being so before he died, this end, the last work of him, the same that became the cusp of his literary work.  It may be that in the works mentioned above the devil had a bit of grace, but Goethe was the main writer to change the perspective about the same devil and give a different vision of the classical tragedy.

As stated in the previous paragraph, comedy is what gives life to the work, which makes it different from all books of that time; In the book The name of the rose of Umberto Eco, there is a part that defines laughter like what frees the village from the Devil’s fear. If Mephistopheles were not in the story or was a totally serious character, there was no presence of comedy; It could even be said that the work would transmit fear, would become a complete tragedy, even the structure and total history of Fausto would be changed, without the devil comedian, which is mefistopheles, the work would be sadness in a book.

To the above, it is added that, this comedian interpreter is never one one, that is, he is not supporting or supporting the bad side, he manages an ambiguous speech, often encourages that Fausto does what he wants , either fair or perverse. On the other hand, the picturesque demon guides him to do what he is in his plans, the presentation of Mefistopheles to Fausto at the beginning of the work can be taken as an example, since from the first moment he warns what he really is and represents “ I am a small portion of that element that, continuously walking in search of evil, only knows how to do good ”.

 The representation of the good in him is when the representative of the darkness advises the man dissatisfied with falling in love with Margarita being a gentleman, treating her as a woman and not treating her right. On the other hand, to demonstrate that the devil also guides him towards the perverse, he looks when Fausto kills Valentino, his beloved brother, for little rational reasons and everything because Mephistopheles convinces him to take his life from an innocent person. Someone would be able to commit such a violent act without the evil intervening?

Third, it should be taken into account that Mephistopheles goes to the black humor several times, providing jocularity and encouraging the situation. According to Robbin Ann Rice of the Popular Autonomous University of the State of Puebla, fictional and imaginative literature has taken advantage of the devil as a complex, paradoxical and fun character; mixing several personalities in one; The demon itself loses all the reputation of him as an almighty evil at the time he quotes the ironic comments of him in uncomfortable situations. 

To better illustrate the situation of black humor, it is noted when in the final scene the devil lost everything, he no longer has the treatment and all his time was lost, he realizes that Faust’s soul goes to heaven with a group of Cherubines and Mephistopheles instead of regretting, all it does is make fun and even shorten the nakedness of these beautiful angels. “Today I start looking with pleasure, both beautiful and affable young; curse them why don’t I know?. The pink boys that I hated, really seem to me, today, well!".

Adding to the arguments presented above Mephistopheles gives the perspective of the vision of tragicomedy through the picaresque and convincing. It can be seen when he convinces Faust to accept his treatment based on the fact that the question is not, should I do it? Yes No How should I do it?, proceeding to the man accepting everything he tells him. 

About mischief, this is present when he achieves what he proposes being more than flirtatious, gallant, with flattery full of gentlemenity and respect “it has not been the ornaments that have made me fall into error; In this case, Miss, if I have suffered mistake, guilt have your distinguished air and your dignified and penetrating look. 

How glad I can enjoy your company for longer!”, Being a gentleman and telling him so many flattery that he forgets with those that I mentioned above, the aforementioned are situations that reflect how provocative this great comedian is and what causes the reader to laugh and often identify with this.

However, most readers stick and grab Mephistopheles for their attitude, even the same characters within the work are guided and seduced by the master of deception. Inside the work Margarita does not want it, because she suspects what kind of individual she is, and she realizes that although she when she met him, he was so funny and interesting that she even conquered her. 

Well, it turns out that the comedian became a villain, because the entire tragedy of this work is for this entity. The mother’s death of Fausto’s first love is because of the opposite of God, for he gave him the sleepiness that caused him not only not to wake up that night, but never reopen his eyes again, also the Abandonment of Margarita by her beloved, causing the poor woman to commit extreme acts such as killing her descendant. In the second part, when euphorion, the son that Mephistopheles guided Helena to fall in love with Faust and have a son, he tries to fly and dies.

To summarize, the figure of Mephistopheles changes the total vision of the tragedy when he goes to the great jokes of him within the uncomfortable and sad situations; causing the reader to complete. 

The great feat of the book is the introduction of the magnificent character that is mefistopheles, which imposes intrigue, tragedy and especially comedy within the work. What the devil does is what the work will depend, if he says that he has to carry out an activity, people do not hesitate to do so. Well, whether both within the work and outside, readers manage to fall in love with the great character and player of the mind that is Mephistopheles.
