A shoulder injury occurs when the humerus is out of its socket (glenoid). It is a common injury in many sports activity since the shoulder is a very mobile joint. There are several ways which the shoulder could get dislocated, namely: anterior or forward dislocation, posterior or backward dislocation, and inferior or backward dislocation. The most common of shoulder injuries is the anterior dislocation, often caused by a fall or any other type of trauma to the shoulder that causes the humerus to slip forward out of its socket.
Shoulder injuries are characterized by a lot of pain, discomfort, and immobility in the affected shoulder. These types of injuries are prevalent in American football and also in soccer. A most recent example is one suffered by Mohammed Salah, an English soccer player who suffered a dislocated shoulder after an opponent held onto his arm and tackled him to the ground. He was ruled out of the match and was unable to play for the next couple of months. Treatment involves placing back the ball of the joint back into its socket in a process known as closed reduction. A sling or harness may be recommended for several weeks to keep the arm in place during the healing process. In severe cases, arthroscopic surgery may be required to repair torn ligaments or muscle groups. Some extreme cases may need a bone transfer surgery to the humerus (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2).
There is a high probability of recurrent shoulder problems once they have been experienced.

Intense therapy is therefore recommended as well as plenty of rest on the affected shoulder. The athlete should stay off the shoulder for as long as possible to allow for full recovery. If the injury persists, discontinuation of the sport or any sort of trauma on the shoulder is advised for the health and safety of the affected person. With strict adherence to physiotherapy, shoulder injuries can be healed and recovered from effectively.
