The Immoral and Unethical Aspects of Slavery
Farming was the dominant economic activity in the southern colonies due to the favorable climate and availability of expanse spaces of the land. Enslavement of Africans was widely accepted as the slaves provided free labor working on the farms. The author of the article has raised several concerns regarding the effect of slavery on the economy and politics of the Southern Region. The main issue that raises a lot of concern is how the slave owners used free labor for economic gains while continuing to oppress the slaves and the poor white population.
Farmers in the southern colonies saw an opportunity that would give them economic advantage without considering the moral implications. The idea that all men are equal was not enough to stop the farmers from engaging in the slave trade, which later led to slave auctions as the demand for slave labor increased. For example, the author describes moral decay by describing how the slave owners used their influence in politics to create laws that reduced the taxes that the farmers were supposed to pay (Stoll). Low taxation meant that they could gain more profits from the sales of products such as sugarcane and cotton, all of which were cultivated using free labor.
Another example of moral decay is the manner in which the slave owners used the unfree laborers to accumulate power. The farmers influenced the political system to create a situation that fully lacked democracy (Stoll).

Wealth and power meant that the farmers could even influence the central government. The issue of human slavery remained a non-issue. Laws that might have given slaves freedom increased taxes and gave the Africans the right to basic human rights were constantly blocked. It is no wonder, therefore, that the select few continued with the morally and ethically wrong act of slavery for their gains. Slavery was extremely inhumane.
