My Volunteer time at Florida Hospital
On Monday, June 24, 2018, I began my volunteering journey at Florida Hospital. Although I had an idea and general understanding of what was expected of me as a volunteer, I did not anticipate the experience I had for the one month I was at the hospital. The question I asked before starting my volunteer was “How will this process impact my community?” Through my experience, I believe this question has been answered. On the day of training, I was provided with a list of activities. These activities included interacting with patients and playing music for patients, which gave me an opportunity to impact the lives of the patients.
My primary goal when volunteering at Florida hospital was to understand the different dynamics of health and how forming relationships with patients can help in their recovery process. I have read several theories in nursing. The fascinating theory is Martha Rodgers’s theory of the “Science of Unitary Human Beings.” Rodgers considers nursing as both an art and science and recognizes that different energy fields affect a patient’s health (Rogers 141). With this knowledge, my main objective was to play the piano for the patients. Most of the patients were bored. To help the quality of their hospital stay, I played music and bought them coffee. Seeing the patients happy was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I believed my gesture improved the quality of their hospital stay and helped in their recovery process.

Wait! My volunteer time that I did this summer at a hospital paper is just an example!

Moreover, I am a believer in improving the mood of patients by having conversations with them. I dedicated most of my time talking to patients to understand their experiences. Most of the time, I held conversations with patients. One particular patient surprised me – she had Alzheimer. We had a ten minutes’ conversation, and she had forgotten who I was when I came back to give her coffee five minutes later. A cancer patient was also pleased with the time we spent together- he was in so much pain. We talked about his family, life, and achievements. He was delighted with his achievements. For a moment, he forgot about his pain and laughed with me. I believe I improved the quality of their stay in the hospital.
Finally, my volunteer work impacted the lives of patients I interacted with. From my experience, I believe it is important for these patients to have an interactive environment to keep them happy and occupied. The hospital environment can be depressing, and this is one of the ways we can improve the quality of their stay. Therefore, I became very knowledgeable after my volunteering work at Florida Hospital.
