Question One
The most exciting thing about Catalina Martinez’s work turns out to be the fact that she gets to experience things she had always wanted ever since she was a young girl growing up through hardship. In her blog, she talks of how she went on a deep undersea exploration expedition as an observer aboard the submersible ALVIN. As a marine scientist, she dreamt of the day she will experience a dive through her own eyes, rather than through the detailed stories of people who have dived before. Such gets fulfilled when she, alongside other scientists, leaps more than 2,000 meters under the sea to collect ancient basalt boulders. She also describes her position as a marine scientist working for NOAA as unique, since she gets to provide opportunities to teachers and students to participate in exciting research cruises
Question Two
I learned that the kind of work Ms. Martinez does is both demanding and fun at the same time. One has to carry out research regularly to discover new things or learn more about what has already been discovered. It’s through these research explorations that the fun part comes in as one gets to see a world very few people have seen, that is the bottom of the ocean and the life it supports

If I had a chance, I would ask Ms. Martinez what part of her job gives her the greatest satisfaction considering her tough childhood

Through what I have read in the materials provided, I learn that there is no specific type of people that can become scientists.

Anyone and everyone through passion and hard work can become a scientist. Ms. Martinez summarizes this up when she says that she became an ocean scientist through an indirect and by no means traditional way. She dropped out of school and even spent some time in the human service sector
