Summary of the article
The political article by Erica Green, which was uploaded to The New York Times on February 1st, 2018 (Green 2). The article explains the life of Karen Reyes, who is an educator protected by DACA program. Reyes teaches the deaf to integrate with the world and assist them to understand what to expect in the future. The DACA policy protected the illegal immigrant children through their childhood, adolescent, and adulthood stages. However, they were to receive deferred action from work permit and deportation for two years. The 29 year-old-educator was among thousands of immigrants who entered the country, got registered by the government, and was granted work permits. The article explains instances where the National Education Association encouraged these immigrants to apply for the DACA program during President Obama’s tenure as the president (Green 1). Daily, they are threatened that they may lose their jobs and get deported back to their countries once they fail to prove their worth and do a great job as American Educators. Ms. Reyes believes that she is yet to be a perfect educator. This becomes a tragedy in her life as she has known the United States as her home since she was a child. Currently, Texas and New York have an approximate of 2,000 educators enrolled in the DACA program (Green 1). However, the current immigration policies by President Trump pushes the educators to become more competent and revise their regulations.

Sociological theory
This article relates to the social functionalism theory, which states that each activity carried out by individual contributes to the society’s continuation. Functionalists like Emile Durkheim mention that a community can be compared to an organism where each part must play its required role for the stability of the body, and none of the components can function by themselves and when there is a crisis in one of them the others look for a way to adapt (Green 11). The article by Erica Green represents the functionalism theory in that the undocumented immigrants had already become part of the society. Each of them plays a crucial role in stabilizing the economy and improving lives. For instance, Ms. Reyes earns her living by educating the hearing-impaired students.
According to functionalist, the outcomes of some activities can either be latent and manifest. Thus, this means that some results are expected and known while others are not. For example, when Ms. Reyes and the others trained to be educators they were unaware that in future they would be treated as underprivileged or people who are illegally in the country. Additionally, these educators have become part of their students’ lives. Therefore, the parents and students who choose for example Ms. Reyes class were not aware of the outcomes of having an educator who is being catered for by the DACA program (McKee et al 61). Based on the social functionalism theory, institutions will only survive if it plays a crucial role in the society. If its services are no longer noticeable, then the institutions will be eliminated naturally. This relates to the current immigration case. Most of the immigrants who were covered by the DACA theory were of importance during Obama’s reign (Hsin et al. 23). However, with the new administration individuals who have not shown competence in their work will automatically be deported.
Sociological concepts
Sociological concepts that explain the events of this article include the issue of social integration, naturalization, symbolic interactionism theory, and the conflict perspective theory.
Symbolic interactionism is a dominant sociological theory. It relates to illegal immigration in that it stimulates communication through symbol exchanges. Immigrants use this approach to their advantage, by guaranteeing that they integrate with their new environment as it was the case with Ms. Reyes. Firstly, Ms. Reyes had illegally migrated to the United States when she was a child. She was brought up by her mother in Texas (Green 28). Ms. Reyes tried her best to integrate into the American Society over the years. The DACA program covered her during her education, up to this time. Additionally, she got educated and trained to be a special education teacher. The administration has shifted, pushing the immigrants to the edge and influencing political instability in the country. This negative attitude results from the negative public image presented by minorities in the U.S. Additionally, the introduction of legislative acts in the 19th century including the anti-immigration sentiments reduced movements into the United States.
Social integration is an essential concept refracted by this article. It is the movement of ethnic and minority groups, refugees, among other unprivileged individuals into the mainstream of the society. This concept efficiently applies when Ms. Reyes explains her childhood memories. She had illegally migrated to the United States with her mother and settled in Texas (Hsin et al. 3). She got enrolled in the DACA program to gain protection during her childhood. Further, she acquired education and trained to be a special education teacher whereby she taught deaf students in the America society. Often, immigrants into the United States experience harsh political climate in the dominant community. In this case, Trump’s decision to end DACA will oversee the deportation of many minority educators living in the United States.
The conflict perspective theory also plays a major role in influencing the present restriction on immigrant educators in the United States. The theory focuses on the conflicted and negative aspects of the educators living in the country (McKee et al 7). It encourages social change and challenges status quo, guaranteeing that the most powerful and rich people succeed in the social order.
Lastly, naturalization is another significant sociological concept that relates to the issue of immigrant adjustments to meet the requirements directed by the U.S. society (Hsin et al. 13). Many immigrants have continued to live in the United States illegally to seek protection and become citizens. The teachers and educators play crucial roles in helping the young generation grow to achieve their full potential. Consequently, naturalized immigrant educators also risk losing their jobs under certain conditions.
Conclusion
Conclusively, the article efficiently explores the fear and tension of immigrant educators protected by DACA program; about sociological theories and perspectives. The American government continues to push the introduction of these phenomena, believing that it will steer the development of the society and sweep the negative aspects. Additionally, the pioneering of these theories and paradigms prove the conceptualization of the society fundamentals, and they’re working towards achieving positive change.
