Problem Identification and Research Design W2 DQ2The Kansas City gun experiment is a classic experimental design. This experiment was a project by the Kansas City Police conducted for 29 weeks. The aim was to investigate the correlation of gun confiscation from criminals and criminal incidences such as homicide, gun violence, and drive-by shootings. In an experimental design, there are a test group and a control group (Research Design, 2018). The researcher treats the test group with the independent variable, that is, the factors impacting a behavior. The control group does not receive any treatment. In the Kansas City gun experiment, the test group was an area known Beat 144 chosen due to the high gun-related violence. The control group was area Beat 242 which had increased incidences of drive-by shootings. The treatment administered was the increase in police patrol in this Beat 144 who were required to detect and seize guns from criminals.
Experimental design also requires a pre-test and post-test administered in both the test and control groups. The pre-test and post-test for the Kansas experiment was a recording of gun crime 52 weeks before and after the project. The last step to the experimental design is a comparison of the results from the two groups. The Kansas Police discovered that there was a 49% decrease in gun crimes in the test group area after they increased gun confiscation by 65% as stated by Research Design (2018).

The control group area registered no change in criminal activity. The Kansas City gun experiment is an example of experimental design because it presents the three basics of experimental design; comparison of area 144 and 242, manipulation of region 144 through gun confiscation, and control test which proved that gun seizure would reduce gun crimes.
