Salem Witch Trials.
Introduction
The whole story in the context revolves around a few individuals who had been accused of taking part in witchcraft. The town of Salem situated in the Puritan part of New England. They have been found and are trying all they can to pull themselves out of the witch hunt mess.
The story began when some girls had gone in a group to the forest to dance with a slave whose name was Tibuta. A reverend named Paris catches them in the dancing and reports them. A girl named Betty falls into a comma, and the whole trial drama begins. Rumors go round the village that they were involved in witchcraft and later was confirmed when Tibuta himself agreed that he was conducting meetings with spirits. It opened up a whole world of new truths such as the fact that Abigail that is Betty’s mother was in a love affair with John Proctor, a local farmer and she as well was involved in being a witch. The trials continue and the number of those accused to be involved in witchcraft increases. The tests go around over the summer and winter, and by then they have caused problems around the neighboring towns. (Wilson, 1997)
The aspect of witchcraft is evident in the context from the beginning. It starts where Betty falls into a comma to the last stage where the trials and cover up plans are being made to evade the court’s verdict. The process shows that witchcraft is under trial and those involved are trying to hide it. (Magoon, 2008)
In conclusion, the people of Salem are bothered by the turn of events where their fears of facing witchcraft and those practicing amongst them is revealed.
