SARA ModelIntroduction
I am currently working together with 12 members of the police service in a community with 8000 people. The community practices agriculture as its main economic activity. Besides, cases of fights among high school youths have increased in the community. Some of the fights simply started with two students from rival schools. However, these fights have since involved multiple students, who have resorted to using weapons like chains, bats and knives. This problem can be solved using the SARA Model in four steps– scanning, analysis, response, and assessment. As explained by Burton and McGregor (2018), the SARA model is a tool that uses evaluation and research tailoring approaches to devise responses to specific problems and test the validity of such interventions.
Scanning
In the case study, several issues may be listed as working together and transforming into a more significant concern. First, the fact that no efforts were taken to stop the initial fight that started with only two students may have encouraged more students to join the fight. The community is also tightly integrated, making it easy for young students from different schools to interact. Although the parents are concerned about the fights, they took no steps to stop it until the students started using weapons. Also, the resource officer may not have been observant enough to detect aggression among students and work toward correcting them in partnership with teachers and members of the community.
Wait! SARA Model paper is just an example!
Analysis
It is possible that most students may lack coping skills and therefore, use violence as the only way to solve their differences. Parents may have also failed to guide their children. Since the fighting only began with two students, it may be possible that it has increased due to peer pressure. Moreover, retaliation among students may contribute to heightening the fights. All these should be useful in identifying the root cause of the fights.
Response
The parents, teachers, and students from the two schools should come together to discuss the cause of the fights. After identifying the cause of the problem, peer mediation may be used to bring the students together. Also, students from the two schools may be trained by their teachers on coping skills, to be able to tolerate each other. This may be incorporated in the school curriculum and taught as one of the subjects in the schools to prevent future violent behaviors. Also, the police should be keener in observing the students to identify and prevent any elements of aggression. Finally, parents should be advised to guide their children to cooperate peacefully with their peers.
Assessment
For the plan to be successful, benefits must outweigh costs. Costs of implementing the plan include funds for developing the curriculum, the police force, mental efforts and time. The above response should provide a long-term solution to the problem of school fights. As such, it will only be considered successful when fights between students cease, students develop coping skills, police officers attached to schools become more observant, and teachers and parents make it as a routine to guide students.
Conclusion
In a nutshell, conflict cannot be solved through the judicial process alone the modern society can act in different ways to better humankind. In the case study, there was an increase in cases of fights between students from two neighboring high schools. This fight may be solved by teaching the students on coping skills, guiding the students, encouraging the police to be more observant and incorporating coping skills as one of the subjects in the curriculum.
